People don’t seem to make eye contact anymore.
What happened with the pleasant nod and smile?
Walking around downtown Hot Springs this weekend, among fellow tourists, I noticed very little eye contact with strangers. Granted, many were entranced by the scenery and sightseeing, myself included, but overall, catching someone’s eye was immediately followed by a quick divert, as if making eye contact was an offense. And striking up a conversation with a stranger was downright scandalous.
It is a fact that the human species have the need to belong. In fact, there is a term for it, “belongingness.” Basically, we have an emotional need to be accepted. So why are we so quick to look the other way?
What do you think about trying something new? Offer a friendly smile, a pleasant nod, a genuine hello. Doesn’t have to be creepy, as a matter of fact I advise against that. But here’s the thing, everyone benefits from a friendly face.
So go ahead and give it a try. It requires such little effort and makes such a huge difference.
